Introduction

If you're reading this, you probably know that I will be spending 10 weeks this summer in Africa. On May 29 I leave via Heathrow for Accra, Ghana, where I will travel to a nearby Liberian refugee camp called Budumburam to work for the non-profit Children Better Way. I will most likely be engaged in teaching activities, as well as AIDS education (and yes, we hand out condoms) and possibly other community initiatives. This will last six weeks, and then I'll embark on a 24 hour cross-continental trip beginning at 7am on July 15th, through the Lagos Airport, Addis Abada, Nairobe, and finally to Entebbe, which is the airport for Kampala, the capital of Uganda. I will then be working in a nearby township called Mukono at an orphanage for elementary school children, many of whom will be AIDS orphans. I'll work there for a month, finally returning home on August 15, just in time to go back to school. Throughout my time in Africa I expect to be able to travel, especially on weekends. I'll be keeping a written journal, but I will try to transfer most of it onto here so people can keep up with me. Expect descriptions of conditions, scenes, and the work, accounts of my travels and people I've met, and political and social commentaries.
